Everything you need to know about Robinhood before you start investing.
Yes. Robinhood is a registered broker-dealer with the SEC and FINRA. Customer accounts are protected by SIPC up to $500,000 (including $250,000 for cash). Robinhood Financial LLC and Robinhood Securities LLC are separate legal entities regulated by FINRA. The company is publicly traded on Nasdaq (HOOD).
Robinhood primarily earns revenue through Payment for Order Flow (PFOF), where market makers pay Robinhood for routing customer trades their way. Additional revenue comes from Robinhood Gold subscriptions ($5/month), margin lending interest, stock loan income, interchange fees from the Cash Card, and income from uninvested cash.
There is no minimum account balance required to open a Robinhood account. You can start investing with as little as $1 using fractional shares. For Robinhood Gold (margin trading), you need at least $2,000 in your account, as required by FINRA regulations.
Robinhood supports trading in: US-listed stocks and ETFs (including commission-free), options contracts (no per-contract fees), cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin, and 20+ more), fractional shares of stocks and ETFs. Note: Robinhood does NOT support mutual funds, bonds, futures, or forex trading.
Robinhood Gold is a $5/month premium subscription that unlocks: 4.5% APY on uninvested cash (vs 0.25% free), 3% IRA contribution match, margin investing at 5.75% annual rate, Morningstar professional stock research, Level II Nasdaq market data, and larger instant deposit limits. If you have $2,000+ in uninvested cash or plan to use margin, Gold typically pays for itself.
To withdraw money: go to Account > Transfers > Transfer to Your Bank. Standard transfers take 3–5 business days. Robinhood Gold members can withdraw to their linked bank instantly (up to certain limits). Note that settled cash (from selling securities) is available to withdraw after the standard T+2 settlement period.
Yes. Robinhood provides all required tax documents including Form 1099-B (stock/crypto sale proceeds), Form 1099-DIV (dividends), and Form 1099-INT (interest). Documents are typically available in the app by mid-February. Robinhood also integrates with TurboTax for easy import of tax data.
Robinhood Gold members get margin investing starting at 5.75% annual interest rate on borrowed funds. Without Gold, margin is not available. Note that margin trading involves significant risk — you can lose more than your initial investment. Margin accounts require a minimum $2,000 balance per FINRA rules.
Yes. Robinhood offers both Traditional and Roth IRAs. Free account holders get a 1% IRA contribution match (up to IRS limits). Gold members receive a 3% match — one of the highest matches available for an IRA. The 2024 IRA contribution limit is $7,000 ($8,000 if age 50+). Matched funds vest over 5 years.
Robinhood uses multiple security layers: two-factor authentication (2FA), device recognition, biometric login (Face ID/fingerprint), 256-bit encryption, and suspicious activity monitoring. Additionally, SIPC protects your securities and cash up to $500,000. For crypto, Robinhood holds assets in cold storage and carries crime insurance.
